I was listening to an interview with author Malcolm Gladwell yesterday
and once again reminded of what he refers to as the “10,000-Hour Rule.”
It states the key to success is simply a matter of practicing a specific
task that can be accomplished with 20 hours of work a week for 10 years,
or any combination of weeks or years that add up to ten thousand hours.
This is applicable to any niche, career, or goal.
As a classroom teacher I reached 10K hours in less than five years. In
my online business it has taken until now, 13 years in, to reach my 10K
hours because I only work an average of fifteen to twenty hours each week,
and only for about forty-five weeks each year. That’s a lifestyle choice.
Yes, everything becomes so much faster and easier and more profitable for
us as authors and entrepreneurs once we have put in the time to make that
so. Until we reach that ten thousand hour mark we may consider everything
we do to be a failure of sorts. This takes us to my second point; until we
make a mistake we learn very little. Be willing to jump in and make the
most of each hour so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor over time.
