Hi Online-Marketing,

This weekend I was supposed to walk 39 miles
(62.7 km) in the Avon Breast Cancer event here
in Santa Barbara. After tearing my Achilles’
tendon less than two weeks ago I knew that was
not going to be possible.

Instead, I’m volunteering all weekend long in
various ways with this group. It takes many
people to make an event like this one happen,

Hi Online-Marketing,

You may know that I tore my Achilles’
tendon about two weeks ago. I wish I
had a cool story about injuring myself
while surfing or skateboarding, but the
truth is that it just kind of happened.
I’m calling it spontaneous combustion.

The day it happened and I had to go to
the emergency room I knew I wouldn’t be
able to do the Avon Cancer Walk that
would commemorate twenty-five years since
I was first diagnosed with breast cancer.
Thirty-nine miles is not a possibility
this weekend.

But I’ll be in Santa Barbara all weekend
to participate from the sidelines, and
raising money for this worthy cause is an
excellent way for me to show my support.

And yes, my foot is 100% better today.

decided to take it easy today and work on

Hi Online-Marketing,

When you go through a natural disaster such
as a hurricane (I was in Andrew in ’92) or
an earthquake (I survived the 7.1 quake in
’94) certain things will occur…

* perishable food is garbage within 24 hours
* you have no running water, so showers and
basic hygiene become a huge cause for concern
* you have no electricity (generators come in
handy, but they are limited and VERY noisy)
* creatures large and small take up residence
in an up close and personal sort of way
* no cell coverage or communication of any kind
* while the good people will stick together,
lots of “bad guys” appear and steal from you

Now I’m a camper and love the outdoors, critters,
and the open sky, but this is a different kind
of experience that is not appealing to anyone,
at least not after that first day.

It took seven full days for the National Guard
to evacuate me after Hurricane Andrew, and that
was only because I was a government employee
at the time. My neighbors were stuck even longer.
By the time I returned with my insurance agent
about two weeks later, what was left of my home
had been ransacked and gutted. I cried.

It was five days before I could drive the five
miles to my mother’s house after the earthquake
to see if she was alright. She was 77 years old
at that time and in poor health with limited
mobility. She had no water and had been eating
saltine crackers for days because she couldn’t
get outside and neighbors thought she wasn’t at
home. I was hurt and angry about this situation.
I will never forget the look in her eyes when I
finally arrived to bring her home with me.

All day today and through midnight tonight I am
donating all of my earnings to the Red Cross for
Hurricane Harvey relief. The situation in the
Houston area is more dire than what I experienced
during both of my catastrophes combined. I want
people in need to know that you and I care about
them, their loved ones, and their pets. It’s still
touch and go and the death toll continues to climb.
