This afternoon I went through training
for a non-profit I will be working with
for the first time. It’s a “safe rides”
program where teens give other teens a
ride home when they have been drinking
or using drugs. Instead of them getting
behind the wheel they have a safe ride
by someone who does not judge them or
lecture them but simply takes them home.
As I sat in the room with the two women
who started this organization, along
with four other adults who were also
being trained I suddenly realized that
I was the only one who had not lost a
child to an accident involving drugs or
alcohol.
Tears came rapidly as I observed how
they had been able to live their lives
with such grace and humility and turn
something so unbelievably heartbreaking
into positive action that has been saving
lives for thirty years, so far. I feel
honored to be a part of this group and
will do my best to serve them.
