This weekend took a very different turn when
an elderly family member was involved in a
bad car accident on Friday. He’s recovering
well, but his car was totaled when someone
driving at nearly twice the speed limit plowed
into him.
I was in Santa Barbara at the time, getting
ready to drive up to San Francisco with a new
friend for a long weekend of dining, dancing,
and discovering. Actually more dining (great
restaurants and farmer’s markets) and some
discovering (at the Exploratorium and also at
the Tactile Dome) than dancing.
This morning I was pleasantly surprised when
this new friend called to say he wanted to
be of assistance and had set the time aside
to do anything that was needed. I was reminded
of the expression “A friend in need is a friend
indeed.” And I am fortunate indeed to always
seem to be surrounded by people who care.

Email me any time. I’m with my family member
today and tomorrow, making sure he is resting
and recovering after the car accident. Thank
God this wasn’t worse for him or the people
who were in the other cars (including a baby).
I forgave the driver who caused this immediately,
but a simple “I’m sorry” at the accident scene
would have been a thoughtful gesture.
