In 2001 I had the chance to be
a math and science specialist
for my school district. It was
going to mean extra classes for
me over the next six months, but
there would also be an increase
in my pay and better job security.
I thought about it for weeks and
even filled out the application,
but in the end I did not apply.
They chose about a hundred teachers
for these positions, but I was not
one of them because I didn’t follow
through with it. I kept thinking
I might do it the next time it was
offered.
That ‘next time’ never came. They
closed the program and only those
who had take action had this great
opportunity. When I had cancer for
the second time the following year
I thought about how different it
could have been for me if only I
had chosen to become one of the math
and science specialists. But it was
too late by then.
The ASM course closes tonight at
midnight. It will most likely be
open again at the end of October,
but there is no guarantee of that.
Most of us would prefer they close
it down forever, truth be told.
