Hi Online-Marketing,
While teaching in the public schools I was
sometimes on the playground with a hundred
or more young students. As I had no other
adults assisting me, it was crucial they
follow directions at all times to ensure
their safety.
I came up with a three stage process I
called “freeze, look, listen.” They
knew that if I blew my whistle for at
least ten seconds that meant there was
an emergency situation and I needed
their complete attention and cooperation.
They were to:
1) freeze in place, no matter they were
doing
2) look for me on the playground (I would
wave my arms to be found more quickly)
3) Listen to my instructions (I carried a
mini bull horn to be heard all over the
yard in case of an emergency)
Once a boy broke his leg – it was a compound
fracture with the tibia protruding through
the skin.
Another time a girl had a grand mal seizure
and lost consciousness.
And then there was the time two boys fell
from the playground apparatus simultaneously,
one sustaining a head injury and the other
breaking his collarbone.
In each case my “freeze, look, listen” strategy
saved the day for those children. They trusted
me to do what was necessary for their safety. I
trusted them to follow my instructions. Not one
child ever suffered needlessly because others
did not trust me in the situation. And all made
full recoveries after receiving treatment. It
was this mutual trust that made the difference.
