Thirty years ago today I was on my way
in to my real estate office to watch
the Challenger space shuttle lift off.
As I gathered with the others around
the small television set I thought about
the first teacher who was going up in
space.

Seventy-three seconds later the explosion
had occurred. Then they showed the faces
of Christa McAuliffe’s high school students,
too stunned to show any reaction to what
would become a tragedy of epic proportion.

In the minutes that followed I remembered
that I had once dreamed of becoming a
teacher, and within six months I was in
my own classroom teaching fifth and sixth
graders on an emergency credential. This
chapter of my life would last for twenty
years, and bring me closer to where I am
today.
