Hi Online-Marketing, This afternoon I spent several hours aboard a steam train with family members and a good friend. The Conductor continued to warn us that no standing would be allowed in the vestibules, and finally I had to see what he was referring to on the train. It turns out that a vestibule is defined as the space between the end doors of adjacent cars that is enclosed, so as to allow the leaving of the doors open to provide for open intercommunication between all the train cars. Who knew? I’ll post some photos on social media later if you’d like to see the steam locomotive and the mountains. Hi Online-Marketing, On March 1 of this year I decided to stop purchasing any clothing or shoes during the next three months. My closets in both cities (I live in both Santa Clarita and in Santa Barbara in southern California) were over- flowing and I needed to take a break. I survived this 90 day period, and donated many clothing items to several of the groups I volunteer with regularly. I know firsthand those who receive these gently used clothes greatly appreciate it. So I extended this “no look, no buy” to six months. Would I survive? I did, and it ended up being eight full months where I didn’t purchase a single clothing item. It all came to an end yesterday as I decided to walk through my local mall. Macy’s called out to me in a seductive little voice, and I left the store with three blouses I will wear during this upcoming holiday season. It felt weird standing at the register, but I was also proud of myself for what I did. Perhaps I’ll do it again starting on January 1 for a three month period. My new rule: I must donate 2 items from my closet for every one new item I buy. Hi Online-Marketing, This weekend took a very different turn when an elderly family member was involved in a bad car accident on Friday. He’s recovering well, but his car was totaled when someone driving at nearly twice the speed limit plowed into him. I was in Santa Barbara at the time, getting ready to drive up to San Francisco with a new friend for a long weekend of dining, dancing, and discovering. Actually more dining (great restaurants and farmer’s markets) and some discovering (at the Exploratorium and also at the Tactile Dome) than dancing. This morning I was pleasantly surprised when this new friend called to say he wanted to be of assistance and had set the time aside to do anything that was needed. I was reminded of the expression “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” And I am fortunate indeed to always seem to be surrounded by people who care.
