At end end of my first year as a credentialed teacher I
drove to my school each day for 12 looong days and didn’t
teach a thing. Here’s why:
It was the late 1980s and our labor union had voted to
strike. Each morning I would arrive by seven. Instead
of setting up my classroom and greeting my students to
begin our lessons I was handed a sign affixed to a long
wooden stick and directed to join my fellow teachers
for what would be a six hour shift.
My students were there, divided into three groups of two
hundred each and herded into the auditorium to see a
movie, out to the yard for “free play”, or into four of
the bungalows where the administrator in charge handed
out coloring sheets and crayons and told them to be quiet.
I didn’t break down until the third day, when three of my
students escaped from the auditorium and found me on the
sidewalk in front of the school walking the picket line.
I threw my sign on the ground and met them at the fence
that was separating us. We locked fingers and cried until
they were physically pulled away and I was told by a man
I had never met to pick up my sign and keep moving.
You don’t forget those moments in your life. Ever.
The flip side of this situation was that I didn’t receive
a paycheck that month because I had chosen to walk away
from my job. My choice. My belief this was the right thing.
My medical benefits were also cancelled, again because my
actions had led to this result. My choice, yes.
There was one difference between me and the other teachers…
After we finished picketing each day I would drive to my
real estate office and work on some listings. And at the
end of that school year I reversed a decision I had made
a couple of years earlier. Instead of leaving real estate
and only working as a classroom teacher I decided it would
be better for me to work in both careers simultaneously.
I did this for twenty years in order to “future proof” my
income so I could provide for my family. It was so hard,
especially when I was going through cancer treatments two
times, and also when I fell and had a serious work injury.
