Hi Online-Marketing,

I’m on my way to a Halloween party at the Elk’s Lodge in Santa Clarita. It was postponed from last night because of the fires and the children were afraid we couldn’t make it happen tonight. But we did and tonight we will laugh and celebrate. Tomorrow the high winds are returning and the fires will once again be the main focus of the community and everyone will need to lend a hand. I’ll be headed back to Santa Barbara no later than eight-thirty to avoid any situations that are just too much for me right now. There is much work to do in both places and I must put myself first. Hi Online-Marketing,

Early this morning my daughter-in-law and I drove over to Santa Clarita to check on some friends and neighbors who stayed behind during the fires. The “Tick Fire” continues to grow and is still only at about ten percent containment. The skies are a color not typically seen in nature and the air is thick with the smell of burnt wood and plastic. The winds have died down but will be back with a vengeance on Sunday and Monday. We hope to do some good work in the community today and help out wherever we are needed before we return to Santa Barbara. Thank you for your ongoing thoughts and prayers.

To know me today you would never believe I had been someone who did not take a stand on issues of importance and seldom followed through on things I started. But that is exactly who I was until coming online in 2006. I realized almost immediately that I was going to have to change from the inside out if I wanted to achieve success. I had a call with someone this morning and she told me about a very expensive (almost 2K) course she is considering signing up for to learn how to set up and maintain her website. This would enable her to offer this as a service to others as well as to do all of the techie stuff for her own site. The only problem? Welcome to My Community – I Appreciate You Today, and Every Day

Yesterday was a day I don’t want to repeat. The morning was calm and peaceful and by noon two wildfires had erupted in my area. One was ten miles to the east and the other ten miles to the west and within a two hour period they began issuing evacuation orders. Through my “circles of influence” I was able to offer up my home to those who had nowhere to go, especially if they had pets. Friends from Rotary were on their way with their young daughter and large dog when the wind changed direction and my home was no longer a safe haven. We enacted our emergency plan and within twenty minutes had everything loaded into two vehicles so we could head to Santa Barbara.

People and pets always come first, but next comes something many people don’t think about. This is letting everyone in your online and offline communities know what is hapening and that you are safe. Reaching out to others regularly can make or break your business as well. Please consider this as life continues to happen when we are least expecting it.

Today is World Polio Day. In both of the cities I call home in California, Santa Clarita in the desert and Santa Barbara at the beach I will be participating with the Rotary Clubs to bring awareness to this disease. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Polio can be prevented through immunization. The strategy to eradicate polio is based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.

The world laughed in 1985 when Rotary proclaimed their mission to eradicate polio from planet Earth. In 2019 it is only endemic in two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan.

When I became a Rotarian in 2006 I did so in part to connect to something much greater than myself. When we create online businesses we also have the opportunity to connect with something much greater than ourselves. My world has gone from being more localized to now feeling like I am a global citizen.

How about you? Do you feel the global impact when you do business all over the world? A single email message or even a tweet can reverberate around the globe and back again when someone reaches back to you.

Now I’d like to share my observations with you. I have been online officially since the beginning of 2006 and have become sensitive to shifts and trends in the economy and in people’s thinking.

When the recession first reared its ugly head at the end of 2007 I noticed it first with home sales. I have been a real estate broker since 1983 (haven’t been active since coming online, but I am still licensed in California and have my medical insurance through this group) and overnight prices increased and sales dropped to their lowest in almost a decade. Within six months this was front page news, but to those who were not watching the market closely as I continue to do it was financially devastating. Everyone I knew praised my for being so astute and starting a recession proof business on the internet, but I had to admit it was simply a coincidence at that time.

That’s when I became a student of economics. Someday I may return to school for a more formal study in this area and for now I watch several indicators around real estate, consumer confidence, and the amount people have in what is known as “demand deposit” accounts. This includes checking accounts and savings accounts that are liquid.

Throughout 2019 these indicators have not been in favor for people with jobs or careers where they are employees. Your hedge against inflation and other economic downturns can be summed up in two words – online entrepreneurship. During the Great Recession that was officially acknowledged during the summer of 2008 and lasted well into 2013 my business grew and my income increased significantly. Instead of just enjoying what was happening I made the conscious decision to learn from this event and to help others do what I have done.

Welcome to You if You’re New to My Community – I’m Here to Serve You!

It was last week, on Tuesday I believe that I told my neighbor it was the last day of swimming in her pool until next spring. We talked a little while longer, me swimming back and forth vigorously and her up on the deck watching me. Imagine her surprise when she came outside this afternoon to find me swimming once again. With the temperature in Santa Clarita, my desert city reaching 104 Fahrenheit/40 Celsius for the past couple of days it was possible to enjoy the water once again.
“I don’t believe you any more,” she said laughingly. I had told her twice previously it was my last day and then it warmed up again and I jumped in for a cool dip. I truly think today was the last day, but I didn’t dare say that to her.

I’ve had so much positive feedback with what I have shared about the blueprint for entrepreneurs I came up with for my clients at my Santa Barbara Retreat over the weekend. Here are three things not to miss today:

First up is something you can easily set up for chiropractors, starting with those within an hour or less from where you live. It’s from Jeanne Kolenda and Dr. Ben Adkins. Jeanne attended the first live event I co-hosted back in 2010. During a call we had before she came I encouraged her to write an article and submit it to an article directory so it would be published by the time she arrived. She did so reluctantly and was excited when I made a big deal of her and her writing from the stage. Jeanne hasn’t hesitated to take action ever again and her business has skyrocketed over this past decade.

Dr. Ben and I first met at Dennis Becker’s event in Las Vegas in 2012 and continue to be friends. In 2014 we both participated in a private retreat in Cabo San Lucas and that’s when I got to know his wife, Kellie Jo very well. He’s a chiropractor who has been teaching other chiropractors, and other small business owners how to get more business for many years.
